Boats and Ships

Naval power in Age of Empires is crucial. Control of the seas means you can harvest fish, harass your enemy's coastline, engage in trade, prevent transport ships from depositing hostile forces in your backyard, and launch your own sea-based invasions. In many instances, you can reduce most of a rival empire to smoking ruins simply by bombarding it from the sea. Destroying a rival's fishing fleet can really wreak havoc for them.

The important aspect about naval units is that an enemy usually can't counterattack with them as quickly as he can with land-based units. Most of the time, players only have one source for naval units. You may want to build multiple docks to quickly build a fleet. Don't forget that you'll need ample wood and that villagers can repair damaged ships.

Research important to creating boats and ships:

The government center lets you research alchemy (+1 attack for your missile firing ships), and ballistics (increases the accuracy of missile weapons), and engineering (for upgrading to juggernaughts). The market is also very important. It allows you to research woodworking, artisanship, and craftsmanship, each one giving you a +1 range on your missile attacks (and have the bonus of increasing woodcutting).
