Towers

Towers are a keystone to ensuring your empire's safety. A few well-placed towers can hold off barbarian hordes. Towers can also be used to bring the fight to the enemy. Sneak a few villagers to the outskirts of an enemy encampment and quickly build a tower to wreak havoc. Add a few bowmen at the rear to attack any enemy attempting to destroy the tower. This can be very disruptive to your opponent. You can also use towers to guard a gold mine you might have scouted and intend to mine in the future. This way you'll both protect the mine for a brief time and be alerted that your enemy is attempting to mine the gold.

Research important to creating towers:

The government center lets you research architecture (-33 percent construction time and +20 percent hit points for your towers), alchemy (+1 attack for missile attacks), and ballistics (increased missile accuracy and needed for upgrading to ballista towers). The Market is very important. It allows you to research woodworking, artisanship, and craftsmanship, which each give you a +1 range on your missile tower attacks (and have the bonus of also increasing woodcutting).
