GameSpot: Which is your favorite civilization to play and why? Dave Pottinger: Shang. I like to build up quickly, and they're the best at doing that because of the villager cost reduction. Tim Deen: Hittites. Pure combat power with elephant archers and heavy catapults. GameSpot: What's the fastest way to make it to the Iron Age? DP: Go Shang and just pump out all the villagers. In the research department, you only research things at the market (to help your gathering). This leaves you wide open for an attack, though. TD: Lots of villagers (approximately 24). GameSpot: Which civilization do you like to play if you want to attack aggressively? DP: Minoan composite bowmen with alchemy and the range bonuses from the marketplace are an awesome power to deal with (especially when you throw in some ballistas and a few cavalry to defend the archers). TD: Shang - When I attack aggressively I attack in the Bronze Age (four cavalry and one scout) and the early Iron Age (cavalry, archers, and stone throwers). GameSpot: Which civilization is the best for building and holding a Wonder? DP: For Wonder building, you need a lot of villagers, so Shang come in handy again. You also really need to research architecture at the government center, so you need to find a civilization that has that available to them. For Wonder holding, I like the Choson because they get ballista towers and cheap priests. With a few walls to occupy enemy troops, priests can wreak havoc by way of conversion. I also like to set up "death funnels" with ballista towers. TD: Shang - tough walls and fast buildup. Choson - superior towers and good foot troops. Babylon - tough walls and towers. GameSpot: How do you keep from getting "grunt rushed"? DP: The best strategy is to build up quickly and pop a few military units out here and there. Packs of archers do very well killing things at the start of the game, so you need to plan for that eventuality. What I do is spread out so that I can't be attacked all at once. When I enter the Bronze Age, I usually have about five to ten troops (depending on who I'm playing and what I know they like to do) and a few towers. Once I enter the Bronze Age, I make the decision about what units I'll pursue and start to pump them out (unless I'm going after an Iron Age unit). TD: Walls and towers.
