Yamato Empire of the Rising Sun Campaign #5: Canyon of Death

Run up, fire, and retreat, then repeat

Goal: Recover the artifact and return it to your island.

The Skinny: This one is quite challenging. You start with a limited force and you need to wind your way along roads that take you past hostile troops to find a couple of transport boats. From there you will be united with your allies, and you must invade a small island and defeat a tough mix of units.

Your horse archers are the key to this scenario. Protect them well.

You start in the eastern corner of the map. Be careful how far west you move. The enemy is out there, and you can trigger an attack quite easily. It's a good idea to assign your units into groups. Being able to select your cavalry with a keystroke is handy.

Move south, hugging the edge of the map as much as possible. There are a couple of horse archers you need to defeat. Cautiously probe westward with a short swordsman. When you trigger the attack, move your cavalry up to defeat the horse archers. If you go farther west, you will trigger more attacks, so retreat to the east.

There is a road heading west bordered by towers, which overlooks the beach where your transports are docked. This beach area is also guarded by towers and enemy troops. What you need to do is carefully find the soft spot on the road between the towers that will let you move to the road's edge and fire at the enemies on the beach. This is where your horse archers come in.

Your horse archers can quickly run up to target an enemy and fire a shot and retreat before being hit by the enemy archers. You need to repeat this until all the enemies on the beach are dead.

Now you can carefully begin to follow the road westward and use your horse archers to destroy the towers. Your horse archers have superior range and can peck away at the towers at their leisure.

Keep at this all the way along the road. When you get to the beach, there is yet another tower to destroy. Then hack through the wall to get to your boats.

Once in the boats, sail to the island where your allies patiently wait. You now have a priest who can heal your troops.

The enemy island is just to the north, so be wary - it looks deserted at the southern tip, but quite a horde waits all bunched together at the northern end. If you made it to the island with most of your starting troops, you probably have enough to just muscle your way through. However, the enemies have two catapults, so you have to be careful.

Your best bet is to land a few cavalry and probe northward to draw the catapults down. Most of the other enemy troops will stay put. Just listen for the characteristic sound of the catapult being fired and quickly move your cavalry. At some point turn and charge to defeat the catapults.

After the catapults are dealt with, you can continue this peek-a-boo game to draw the enemy down sporadically. At this point it's simply a matter of carefully managing your troops, withdrawing and healing them as needed.

Once the enemy is defeated, return the artifact to your island to win (so don't let your transports be sunk).

Dangers: Don't lose your horse archers, and later don't lose your priests!
