Yamato Empire of the Rising Sun Campaign #4: Mountain Temple

The owner of the temple is the king of the hill

Goal: Destroy the Izumo Temple and erect your own temple in its place.

The Skinny: The Kibi are to the east and possess gold in two locations. One location you can reach simply by marching east; the other requires you to sail to the east and land an invasion force. The problem is that the Kibi are fairly well fortified. The other way is to simply play a waiting game, upgrade to the Iron Age, and destroy the Kibi but leave their dock intact so you can trade food for gold.

At the outset you'll find yourself with a small, closed-in Stone Age village. You have two towers. Build a barracks between them and you'll have a decent wall. This, along with a few axemen, will protect your village from the Kibi as they dribble attacks at you.

Build a dock and two fishing boats - you don't want too many since there aren't that many fish. Pick berries and chop wood. Build a granary and upgrade to the Tool Age.

Now build four or five scout ships. You will be attacked on the river by war galleys, so you need superior numbers.

Build a transport and take five villagers due west to a corner landmass. Be careful - there are a few alligators here. You might want to use your scout ships to kill them, although you can save them for meat.

On this small stretch of land are some gazelles, wood, and gold. Build a storage pit and start harvesting food and wood. Hold off on the gold.

At this point upgrade to axemen and create a small force of six to march north. You need to keep the Kibi from mining the first patch of gold. Sweep the area clean of the Kibi and bring up a villager or two to build a storage pit to mine gold and pick berries.

Build a market and one other Tool Age building, and when you get 800 meat, upgrade to the Bronze Age. Now research gold mining and mine the gold.

Build farms at this point and upgrade your navy. Sail east with your Bronze Age triremes and attack the other Kibi settlement, being careful not to attack the dock. They will build war galley after war galley, but will eventually run out of resources. Once they are quieted, begin trading food for gold.

Now upgrade to the Iron Age. Build a catapult trireme and sweep the northern shores free of towers. Once that's done, prepare an invasion force.

The mountain is well fortified and consists of winding roads. You will have to defeat several catapults and ballistas and a horde of composite bowmen. There are also quite a few cavalry units. You should be able to build better troops, though, and slug your way through. Take a stone thrower or two to dispatch the towers along the way. Be careful of catapults attacking you from above.

You may have some luck converting the enemy with a few priests as well.

The temple you need to destroy is protected by a few priests and several towers. Get the priests with cavalry to minimize your conversion losses.

Destroy the temple and build your own to win.

Dangers: The only real dangers are in trying to survive the initial Kibi attacks, which are not that fierce, and not being able to amass the 800 gold needed for upgrading to the Iron Age. Make sure that you don't destroy that dock!
