Yamato Empire of the Rising Sun Campaign #3: Capture

Screenshot
The prize you seek is well guarded

Goal: Capture the artifact.

The Skinny: This one is fairly routine, but it does force you to fight on two fronts. The landmass is a thin ring of land around the map borders, with the middle consisting of water. Right in the middle of the water is an extremely well-fortified island that houses the artifact you must recover. There is a natural but narrow land bridge to this island from the eastern corner of the map.

Gold is the key to this scenario. You start in the Bronze Age and you need gold to advance to the Iron Age. The enemy is located both to your east and your north.

At the beginning, you need to chop lots of wood and pick berries. Build a dock to build a few fishing ships as well, but also make four war galleys. Cruise the galleys east to harass the enemy there and destroy his dock.

Send a few villagers north to find a small gold deposit. Build a storage pit and mine the gold. Send a few troops up there as well. A watch tower would be a good idea, too, but be sure to build an archery range and create six or seven archers and send a few shock troops to support them. If you head a bit further north, there is substantially more gold guarded by towers. You can mine some of this gold just out of range of the towers. When you are strong enough, send a force to destroy the towers to get the rest of the gold.

You are going to be assaulted on both fronts, so be prepared. You don't need a huge army, but you do need a few towers and seven or eight axemen. Your archers to the north will stop the brunt of those invasions, but some chariots may sweep by, so be prepared.

Use your gold to build some stone throwers. Build an escort force and head east to destroy the enemy there. You can't wait too long, since most of the gold you need is here and the enemy will start mining it. Use your ships for support.

Once you gain control of the gold (it may take awhile, but at least keep the enemy from mining too much of it), you can mine and upgrade to the Iron Age. At this point build a sizable force and start marching north to destroy the other enemy. Use your navy to weaken them as much as possible and destroy their dock.

After you defeat the north army, make your assault on the island. Use catapults to knock down the walls and towers, and use priests to convert whomever they can. Recover the artifact to win.

Dangers: You will be assaulted on two fronts, so be wary. You also need to get access to the gold to the east fairly early, before it is mined by the enemy.
