Chapter Seven: Wonders

Ramayana

Age: Ancient
Cost: 2,160
Prerequisite: Religion
Primary Function: Happiness
Effect: +3 happiness throughout civilization
Obsolescence: Age of reason

Especially for early-game expansion, this inexpensive ancient wonder can keep your citizens happy and content as you pass into the age of reason. Constructing Ramayana also lets you devote the people used for entertainers (which will most definitely be required if you decide to pass up on Ramayana) to other areas, benefiting other resources. A similar ancient wonder, Chichen Itza, also alleviates happiness concerns (by eliminating crime) and becomes obsolete much later than Ramayana.

A solid way of improving happiness early in the game, Ramayana's only downside is that it becomes obsolete fairly soon.

Sensorium

Age: Genetic
Cost: 20,000
Prerequisite: Neural interface
Primary Function: Happiness
Effect: Eliminates unhappiness due to overcrowding; eliminates pollution unhappiness
Obsolescence: Never

Polluting players will find the most use out of the Sensorium, which eliminates unhappiness due to pollution as well as overcrowding. Maintaining the balance between high production and unhappiness due to its pollution can be a tough task, especially for the military-oriented player. With the Sensorium, you can at least solve the unhappiness problem - but that still leaves your polluting cities in tact. Keep in mind that you still might have to address that pollution problem, especially if you believe someone out there might be tempted to acquire The Eden Project.

Sphinx

Age: Ancient
Cost: 2,160
Prerequisite: Stone working
Primary Function: Gold
Effect: Reduces military readiness cost by 75 percent.
Obsolescence: Age of reason

An inexpensive wonder (and one that can be discovered very early on), the Sphinx can dramatically reduce the cost to support a military force and let you keep that force constantly on alert. With this gold savings, you can either produce more military units (you should gain a pretty impressive early game force with the help of the Sphinx) or devote the savings toward expansion and research, which should still give you an edge on your opposition. Gold-saving wonders are always vital to growth, but the Sphinx carries the added benefit of letting you maintain a heavy early army. If you have close neighbors, the Sphinx can give you that edge to take them out early on. Keep in mind, once you hit the age of reason, you must begin paying for those pricey military units once again.
