Chapter One: Game Setup

When you begin a game of Civilization: Call to Power the main menu will pop up offering you a choice of either a single or multiplayer game.

Single Player

If you're brand new to turn-based strategy games, you should run through the in-game tutorial, where you'll learn the fundamentals of playing the game and the basic concepts you must be familiar with. If you have prior experience with Civilization or Alpha Centauri, you'll find many of the concepts remain essentially the same, so don't hesitate to dive right into a new game.

Every game of Civilization: Call to Power begins after a random map has been generated. Despite the unknowable nature of what lies ahead, you can still exert a little control over the game world.

Difficulty

Difficulty affects not only how challenging the AI will play against you, but the severity of roving bands of barbarians. Each jump in difficulty will find the AI increasing in ferocity, with deity being the ultimate challenge. If you have little experience with these types of games, consider beginning at the chieftain level and easing your way in. For a moderate challenge, try playing at the prince level. Only when you have mastered the many elements of the game should you consider anything more difficult than Prince.

Barbarians
Adjusting the barbarian level will have an immediate impact on your game. If you'd rather not worry about barbarians, set this option to Ruins Only, and they'll never appear. This is recommended for first-time players. Setting the option to Roving Bands will find small outbreaks of barbarians appearing at random times, while Restless Tribes ups the ante and increases the frequency of their attacks. For the ultimate challenge, set this option to Raging Hordes, and you'll definitely have your hands full; the barbarians almost pose more of a threat than the other competing civilizations!
