Chapter Seven: Wonders

Gaia Controller

Age: Diamond
Cost: 20,000
Prerequisite: Gaia theory
Primary Function: Pollution/food
Effect: Ends threat of global disaster; +25 percent food in civilization
Obsolescence: Never

The Gaia Controller is an interesting wonder because it could actually assist other civilizations by ending the threat of global warming. Depending on whether you think that is a good or bad thing (how's your relationship with the other civilizations?) will determine if you should spend the hefty production units for this wonder. If you're having pollution problems due to global warming - particularly if you're worried about someone constructing The Eden Project - the Gaia Controller will help and have the bonus of boosting your food production.

As time passes, the polluting cities begin breaking down the ozone layer opening the window for global warming. While assisting the entire world isn't necessarily your agenda, by building the Gaia Controller, you are rewarded with a boost in food production.

Galileo's Telescope

Age: Renaissance
Cost: 2,880
Prerequisite: Optics (with mechanical clock)
Primary Function: Science
Effect: Increases scientists' effect by 200 percent in host city
Obsolescence: Robotics

The player who can swipe Galileo's Telescope first usually will have a leg up on advances for sometime, at least until the genetic age when Galileo's Telescope becomes obsolete. Keep in mind that this wonder only has an effect inside the city in which it was built. Don't waste the resources discovering this wonder in a population- and science-starved city; instead, plop Galileo's Telescope in your most prolific research city. Once there, turn more workers into scientists, and you'll begin an explosive research boom. Put the technology lead to good use, however, by securing some city improvements and discovering new military units.
