Assyrian

Strengths: Units produced by the archery-range building fire 40 percent faster. Villagers move 30 percent faster.

Weaknesses: A lot of the Iron Age units and research items are closed to them. They cannot build centurions or the phalanx, and the only Iron Age vessel they can produce is the trireme. They also don't get elephants of any type. They don't get the improved or composite bowmen or the heavy horse archer.

Assyrian Strategies: The Assyrians can begin to flex their muscles as soon as they hit the Tool Age and build an archery range. Their fast villagers allow you to get ahead of other civilizations, both in research and resource gathering, so you can try to be the first to make it to a subsequent age, build a small army, and strike while you have a technology advantage. Archers will of course make up a large part of your army. It's not a bad idea to get a small group of archers together immediately after you get to the Tool Age and build an archery range. Use them to harass and slow your enemy's resource gathering, picking off villagers and retreating when they come under fire. In major battles, use infantry to engage enemy troops, so your archers can stay behind and fire their arrows.

What to watch out for: The speed advantage of your villagers will be blunted in a long game. Other civilizations will be able to field a more technologically advanced Iron Age force given time. Don't hedge your bets on controlling the seas either. Don't depend entirely on your archers - you'll still need a varied army.

Babylonian

Strengths: Double wall and tower hit points, priests rejuvenate 30 percent faster, and villagers mine 30 percent more stone.

Weaknesses: Poor Iron Age cavalry (horse archers are the only mounted Iron Age units they receive) and relatively weak Iron Age infantry. Babylon does not get either centurions or the phalanx. They don't get the chain mail and iron shield upgrades either, further weakening them against an Iron Age army.

Babylonian Strategies: One of the best civilizations for winning by building and holding a Wonder. Strong walls and towers, extra stone, and priests ready to convert enemies laying siege to your civilization as the Wonder is being built make for an ideal combination. All the Bronze Age units and upgrades are open to them as well, meaning they can field a formidable Bronze Age army. Those towers with double hit points can also be used to wreak havoc on the enemy. Building some early on near the neutral gold mines can be a real irritant to your enemy. Towers can protect your harbors, too.

What to watch out for: Quick strike civilizations, like the Sumerians or the Shang. Babylon is a strong Iron Age civilization but a weak Stone Age civilization. Also, be wary of technologically superior Iron Age armies. Make them fight you near your towers and priests.
