CivilizationsSoldiers Page 6 of 7
Phoenician

Strengths: War elephants and elephant archers are 25 percent cheaper, and catapult triremes and juggernaughts fire 65 percent faster.

Weaknesses: The Phoenicians are a well-rounded civilization, but their advantages don't manifest themselves until the Iron Age. They also do not get any Iron Age siege weapons besides their ships. The juggernaught is an expensive upgrade, as well.

Phoenician Strategies: Get to the Iron Age and then storm your opponent with your cheap elephants and fast catapult triremes. Research technologies that will yield archery range and stable bonuses. The Phoenicians can field a strong army in all four ages, though, so attacking earlier than the Iron Age is possible, even if you're just doing a preemptive harassment strike.

What to watch out for: Fast-start civilizations, like the Shang. Your bonuses don't kick in until the Iron Age.

Shang

Strengths: Cheap villagers at -30 percent cost and walls with double hit points.

Weaknesses: No Iron Age navy or ground troops make the Shang weak on the Iron Age battlefield and seas.

Shang Strategies: The Shang, if played properly, can get you to any of the ages first, which is always a big advantage. Since you have cheap villagers, build a lot and research the wheel. The Shang get all the Bronze Age units, so if you get there first, you can have a superior army knocking on the door of your enemy. When you get to the Iron Age, research Jihad to make your villagers more powerful. The Shang are also a good civilization for building a Wonder, with their cheap workers, fast advancement through the ages, and walls with double hit points. In the Iron Age, the Shang should build cavalry and siege weapons as well.

What to watch out for: Getting hit early on when you may only have villagers. Also, be wary of getting drawn out from behind your walls in the Iron Age. And don't build too close to the water if you plan on fighting Iron Age opponents. It will be hard for you to control the Iron Age seas.
