Chapter Seven: Wonders

National Shield

Age: Genetic
Cost: 20,000
Prerequisite: Unified physics
Primary Function: Defense
Effect: Provides a forcefield in every city
Obsolescence: Never

Defensive-minded players will be most attracted to the National Shield's benefits. By providing a forcefield in each city (an individual forcefield costs 6,000), this wonder saves the time and resources in providing a civilization-wide defense. The more cities you have, the more cost-effective this wonder will be. Keep in mind, however, that while the forcefield offers a durable shield against conventional ground and air warfare, it will do little or nothing against a nuclear attack. If you are more concerned about nuclear assault, you might want to consider the Nanite Defuser, also a genetic age wonder (that's also less expensive).

Philosopher's Stone

Age: Ancient
Cost: 2,880
Prerequisite: Alchemy
Primary Function: Diplomacy
Effect: Opens an embassy in every civilization
Obsolescence: Age of reason

Opening communication lines with opposing civilizations can be key to development, primarily economically, which will assist scientific research and expansion. By snagging the Philosopher's Stone, you can quickly instigate relations with foreign civilizations, potentially opening up avenues for trade routes, exchange of advances, map layouts, and treaties.
