Chapter Six: Terrain Improvements

Farms

Requires: Agriculture
Cost: 200
Time: 2
Gives: +5 Food

One of the first terrain improvements you'll have access to is the farm. At the early stage of the game, you want to increase population as fast as possible. The greater the population, the more workers you have; the more workers you have, the faster your production. For this reason, you should build as many farms as your coffer allows, and soon your cities will be blossoming with people. Make sure that when you start a new city, there are at least two tiles that can be earmarked for farms.

Fisheries

Requires: Ocean farming
Cost: 500-900
Time: 2
Gives: +15/+30/+40 food

Once you have access to fisheries, you should consider getting rid of all farms you currently have and convert them to mines for increased production. Because the fishery is capable of producing far more food than a simple farm, you should move all food production to the water and protect it with a boat or two. This lets you generate more food than before as well as free up a few workers that can either work some new mines or be earmarked for science or entertainment duty.
