Chapter Six: Terrain Improvements

Hydroponics Farm

Requires: Smart materials
Cost: 1,400
Time: 2
Gives +25 food

Unlike normal farms, the hydroponics farm, once developed, can be built in any terrain square, even if it does not have soil. Each hydroponics farm will grant you +25 food per turn, a sizable boost, especially for those cities that are secluded from grassy plains and stuck in the mountains mining. Hydroponics farms should be built on terrain squares surrounding a city that is having trouble evolving its population.

Listening Post

Requires: Electrification
Cost: 1,000
Time: 4
Gives: Vision - 8

The listening post is a superior way to keep tabs on large chunks of land without risking your military units to do so. You can place this improvement anywhere within your borders and immediately gain a vision bonus of +8, meaning eight squares will be displayed in any direction. Listening posts are best used along the coastlines to monitor enemy shipping activity as well as along chokepoints and borders with enemy civilizations. Just a few of these placed around your civilization can offer you a powerful warning in regards to enemy movement, allowing you more time to amass your units and fighting off any coming offensive.
