Nets Requires: Shipbuilding Nets are a primitive modifier for food production. While the modifier may not be stunning, the low cost of this unit makes it desirable, especially for those cities that have limited access to farmland. Often, nets and fisheries will be a city's only source for food and population growth, so make sure you use every inch of water you have near a city for this purpose. Radar Station Requires: Jet propulsion Once a radar station has been erected, you'll receive a warning once an enemy or neutral unit appears within 25 tiles of the radar station. This is a huge advancement in monitoring enemy activity, so don't neglect the power of this unit. Most useful when built along your borders and coastline, the radar station should be protected by a SAM to prevent opposing air power from taking it out as well as a few fortified ground units, as radar stations are a favorite target of the enemy.
Requires: Railroad The next step up from roads is the railroad, which lets your units trim their movement rates by 1/5. Once you have a gridwork of railroads laid out between your cities, you can move your stable of units around with more speed, making it easier to marshal your units to trouble spots in times of need.
Requires: Toolmaking The most primitive travel improvement is roads, an often overlooked piece of the puzzle that the computer AI uses to great result. Having a series of roads connecting all your cities ensures you can move your units at an increased rate. In the early portion of the game, this is incredibly important, as trouble could come from any direction at any time, and having an infrastructure of roads at least lets you get your units around the map in the quickest way possible.
