Chapter Six: Terrain Improvements

Food Modules

Requires: Asteroid mining
Cost: 1,400
Time: 2
Gives: +40 food

In space, no one can hear your stomach growling, but this doesn't mean your colonists don't need food. This is where the food module comes in, created especially for space-dwelling people. Able to deliver +40 food per turn, just a few of these are all that is needed to get your orbiting cities pumped up in population.

Food Pods

Requires: Space colonies
Cost: 600
Time: 2
Gives: +20 food

A slimmed-down version of the food module, food pods produce half as much food but cost significantly less. Space permitting, you're better off sticking with food pods, as two pods produce the same as one food module, but the pods are less expensive cheaper.

An often overlooked terrain improvement is land tiles. If you have a city surrounded by unproductive swamp tiles, open the terrain window and select a plains tile and place it on all the swamp tiles. Soon, you'll have a whole new area on which to build improvements.

Food Tanks

Requires: Genetic tailoring
Cost: 2,200
Time: 2
Gives: +60 food

The mother of all space-based food generators, the food tank is an expensive piece of equipment and doesn't quite live up to the hype. If you have money to burn or are tight on space, go for the food tank. Otherwise, you're better off staying with food modules that produce slightly less food, but cost far less.

Fortification

Requires: Stone working
Cost: 1,000
Time: 4
Gives: +150 percent defense; vision range 2

He who builds a ton of fortifications will have a valuable edge when war breaks out. The smart player will build fortification along coastlines and chokepoints and place his best defensive units on them in a fortified position. The bonus of 150 percent defense will find the enemy hard-pressed to bust through your ranks, ultimately making the difference between invasions. Take the time needed to secure your territory by placing fortification near valuable assets like trade routes and resources.
