Chapter Six: Terrain Improvements

Air Base

Requires: Aerodynamics
Cost: 1,000
Time: 4
Gives: Vision -2 / radar - 3
Special: Refuels air units, allows paradrop

Air bases are crucial to the advancement of your civilization. Without them, the units that compose your air force will be forced to return to a friendly city before their fuel runs out. If fuel runs out, the unit is destroyed. Considering planes don't grow on trees and returning a plane to a city is often a pain, you should build a series of air bases. Ultimately, air bases should be placed in a circle around your borders so you have a jumping off point in any direction. Additionally, since air bases are a frequent target of the enemy, you should set up a few fortified units to protect the structure and perhaps build a SAM to fight off any advancing air units. Once you've built a few air bases, you should move any planes you have from your cities to the bases, so you have a them prepared for any enemy incursion.

Assembly Bays

Requires: Space colonies
Cost: 600
Time: 2
Gives: +30 production / +5 gold

The little brother of the advanced assembly bay, this improvement works exactly the same as its relative but offers less in terms of gold and production benefits. Fortunately, the assembly bay is relatively cheap, letting you place quite a few of these around your largest cities, beefing up production rates and decreasing the amount of time it takes to produce new military units and city improvements.

In this city window, the automated fishery produces a huge 35 food per turn, while other tiles are only producing five or so. With this in mind, you could take workers off the less-productive food tiles and turn them into entertainers or laborers to benefit your city.

Automated Fisheries

Requires: Robotics
Cost: 1,400 - 2,000
Time: 2
Gives: +25/+50/+60 food

The ultimate in food production, automated fisheries must be placed in water tiles that have access to a work force. Depending on the tile, you can receive a great bonus of +60 food per turn, letting you take other workers off farm detail and placed into science or entertainment. Automated fisheries are a frequent target of the enemy, so the wise player will have a patrolling boat monitoring the waters for enemy activity. Losing an automated fishery can have serious affects on a large city, often resulting in a sudden decrease of population that can lead to an unproductive riot.
