Chapter Six: Terrain Improvements

Advanced Farms

Requires: Agricultural revolution
Cost: 500
Time: 2
Gives: +15 food
Note: Build adjacent to irrigated land, like a river, water, or farm

Advanced farms are an upgrade of the original farm, offering a appetizing +15 in food generation per turn, making this the perfect improvement for cities that are struggling for good population growth. Just a few of these placed around a struggling city can make all the difference, and soon the population will increase, allowing for more workers that in turn lead to increased goods production. For maximum benefit, build this improvement on rivers to jack up the rate even more.

Advanced Mines

Requires: Electricity
Cost: 800-1,000
Time: 2
Gives: +10/+20/+30 production; +5/+10 gold

Once you've researched electricity, you'll have access to advanced mines, an upgrade to mines, offering a vast increase in production rates. Advanced mines are most useful in cities that have been built in mountainous regions as opposed to flat land, though you can receive a benefit no matter where they are placed. However, mountains will give you the biggest bonus, a bonus that can then be used for rapidly increasing the manufacturing of units. On the downside, advanced mines are not cheap, so place them carefully in mountain zones and protect them with a fortified unit, as destroying mines is a favorite pastime of the enemy. Alternatively, ransacking enemy mines will benefit you greatly, cutting into the production of the opposition.

Advanced Undersea Mines

Requires: Ultra-pressure machinery
Cost: 1,000-1,400
Time: 2
Gives: +60/+80/+100 production; +10 gold

A great way to beef up production is to place a series of advanced undersea mines near your largest cities. As long as the workers have access to the coast, they can operate this improvement. Once worked, the city will benefit from a huge increase in production. You'll soon be pumping out units as if there's no tomorrow. But be warned: the enemy is likely to come floating by in a nefarious boat and attempt to pillage your advanced undersea mines in an attempt to slow your output. For this reason, place several boats near the mines, preventing the enemy from getting close and screwing up your plans.
