Wizard Single-Player Strategies
Weakest (at least strength-wise) of the three character types, wizards must rely on stealth, speed, and traps to succeed in defeating Hecubah and her minions. Blessed with health and invisibility spells, wizards can slip past many of the most difficult creatures. This is not to say that wizards can't go fist to fist with some monsters, but by and large, it is simpler to run away than turn and fire - or simply sneak past.
Health: Poor
Magic: Excellent
Strength: Weak
Speed: Slow
Surviving with Spells
In the first stages of the game, wizards rely heavily on their magic missiles to do their dirty work from afar. Magic missiles thin out incoming crowds of bats and spiders, and their tracking ability lets you outrun the vast majority of enemies while firing at them over your shoulder. Speed is important for wizards, and you should buy items of speed if you can't find them as you adventure.
Once you get your invisibility spell, use it often. Sneak into rooms and scout out the best places from which to mount attacks. Find places where you can pick off single enemies at a time and work your way carefully through a room. The confuse spell works well against solo enemies in conjunction with an offensive spell. Confuse the enemy first, then cast lightning or fireball at the enemy until he reengages you.
To escape a powerful enemy, either cast invisible upon yourself or confuse on your enemy, then run for it. When you've managed to put a little distance between you and your enemy, cast invisible upon yourself and start walking in a random direction. Enemies cannot hear you if you are walking.
Use the lock spell to your advantage. If you are invisible, you can often lock gates strategically and cast your offensive spells through the gates.
The Spell Belt
In the midgame, create one spell belt that consists of the sorts of defensive spells (force field, invisibility, protection against poison, and so on) that you want to load up on while you are standing next to mana regenerators. Make this your secondary belt, while your primary belt contains confuse, lightning, fireball, and magic missiles. Whenever you are near mana regenerators, switch to your defensive belt and cast spells on yourself - invisibility coming last in the list.
