Always keep back-up items in your inventory. Don't carry around one melee weapon and hope your current one stands up to the task. Have some back-ups ready to use once your current weapon becomes heavily damaged. This is especially true if you plan to use the ogre axes, powerful but flimsy weapons that don't stand up to heavy punishment. Though they're heavy, you must carry several, as it doesn't take long for one to become unusable.
Also, carry weapons that complement each other and place both in your primary and secondary weapon quick slots. For example, you may want a melee weapon as your primary weapon and a ranged weapon for your secondary weapon. Or, perhaps choose an indestructible weapon (such as the halbred you'll find in the single-player game) as your primary weapon and a fire weapon for your secondary weapon to use against the undead.
Armor works similarly. Always keep up a back-up suit of armor, especially breastplates, which seem to wear down more quickly than other sections of armor. Always wear the best and most durable armor you have, but specialize certain areas. For instance, an anti-zap breastplate helps keep you safe from spell attacks (metal armor takes more damage from electrical attacks). Or, you can select a cape of healing; though it may not protect you as well from attack, the benefits to health restoration far outweigh its disadvantages.
Spending Gold Wisely
Because you must face many enemies toe-to-toe, be sure to keep a full stock of health items. Meat and apples are cheap (plus, you can find them frequently throughout the chapters) but don't offer much restoration. Red restore-health potions work best, so always replenish your stock up to the full level of nine with each shopkeeper you find. Cider also restores health, but at the expense of a few moments of disorientation. Also keep anti-poison potions and items (mushrooms) stocked in case you encounter spiders, zombies, or other poisonous beasts.
