Instead of running up and attacking standing still, perform some hit-and-run maneuvers. The method requires studying the approximate range of your melee weapon. For example, you want to approach the enemy close enough for your weapon to strike, but far enough away to retreat without getting struck with a counterattack. While the method likely won't work against some of the faster targets, it's highly useful against slower foes.
Collision swords work especially well with this method of melee attack. A collision sword bounces the opponent back once he's struck, giving you time to retreat and prepare another attack. You should also experiment with other swords, such as those of spark and ember, against specific enemies. For instance, it's better to attack zombies with an ember or fire sword, so they'll actually die. Otherwise, you may face that same creature again.
The Importance of Shuriken
Ranged weapons, particularly in the single-player game, give the warrior the edge he needs against tougher enemies, particularly spellcasters and the beholders. Stock up on the powerful shuriken and their many types (flame, flame and collision, spark, and so on). All will prove useful against enemy spellcasters (wizards are a bit too quick for them, but other foes are vulnerable) and against tougher enemies, like ogres.
Enter new areas slowly, so you don't trigger the enemy artificial intelligence. That way, you can load your shuriken and pummel the enemy from a distance; the enemy will react, but you'll have already inflicted decent damage. You should frequently place shurikens as your secondary weapons so you can quickly select them if the need arises.
Save the shuriken for the tougher creatures and spellcasters. Stick with your melee weapons for the easier beasts.
Weapon and Armor Management
One of the warrior's frequent concerns is keeping his weapons and armor repaired and functional. Through bashing monsters, crates, and barrels, your weapons become damaged and will eventually crumble under repeated use. Likewise, as you take blows from creatures, your armor starts to deteriorate and must be repaired or replaced to remain functional.
