Chapter Six: Terrain Improvements

Sonar Buoy

Requires: Mass production
Cost: 150
Time: 2
Gives: Vision 1, sees submarines

Tired of your water-based cities getting attacked by enemy submarines? What you need is a sonar buoy, an inexpensive improvement that is placed on a water tile. Once constructed, the sonar buoy will spot any submarine that comes within range, letting you deploy your naval forces for an interception run. Place sonar buoy's along your coastline and in the middle of bays and large bodies of water to keep a constant, vigilant watch on enemy sub activity. This becomes even more important if you are developing several underwater cities.

Place sonar buoys along your coastline to monitor enemy shipping activity. It's a great way to spot threatening subs before they do any damage to your fleet.

Undersea Mines

Requires: Sea colonies
Cost: 400-600
Time: 2
Gives: +30/+40/+50 production; +5 gold

The water version of mines with a slightly higher output, this improvement is the answer for production needs in underwater cities.

Undersea Tunnels

Requires: Sea colonies
Cost: 1,200 - 2,400
Time: 2-4
Gives: Movement cost 1/10, land units can move in water tiles

While expensive, a grid of undersea tunnels can be a valuable commodity. Not only does it let your ground units travel over water tiles, but their movement rate is slashed to 1/10 their normal rate. This is a superior way to secretly move units between two cities and, better still, launch surprise attacks. Be warned: the enemy can use your tunnels as well, so keep a sharp lookout for this activity, lest you be surprised yourself.
