Chapter Eight: Diplomacy

Milking a Peaceful Arrangement

After a long early game of keeping the peace, the time might be right to double-cross some of these arrangements you've established. Within the middle game, the time becomes right to push some of these friendly relationships for more technology or favors. By this point, you should be strong enough should the negotiations turn sour.

Eventually the other civilizations, even the early-game peaceful ones, are going to get itchy trigger fingers. Get all you can out of them before they become aggressive. However, by all means, keep the peace with the strongest civilization. Sometimes no amount of tech or money can appease the strongest civilization, particularly if you are obviously the weaker opponent.

Living Dangerously Ahead

While surging far ahead sure looks good on paper, being number one can be awfully difficult against envious civilizations. More often than not, if you've positioned yourself as the overall head honcho in the civilization ratings, the majority of your rivals won't think too keenly of you. Other than the civilization in last place, the other civilizations will be less likely to make peace or trade technology or money with you.

Pacifying several other rivals to prevent resentment toward your high standing can be expensive - not just monetarily, but also to your expansion and growth. Just keep in mind if you are too far ahead, the other civilizations will do nearly everything in their power to bring you back down.
