Chapter One: Game Setup

Map Size

Adjusting the size of the game world will have a direct impact on the flow of the game. A large world with few civilizations will usually find you all alone for quite some time, leaving you free to build up your forces and evolve your people without much risk from competing civilizations. On the other hand, choking the world with lots of civilizations on a small game world guarantees that you'll come face to face with them sooner than later, ultimately cutting into your peace time and forcing you into action much sooner.

Small: 24 x 48
You'll face enemies very quickly, forcing you into either a defensive or offensive state of mind early in the game.

Regular: 48 x 96
This is the default map size and usually lets you build up your defenses and protect your cities before stumbling on an opposing civilization.

Huge: 64 x 128
A huge map with five civilizations sets the stage for an interesting end-game, as most of the civilizations will exist for quite some time before meeting each other. This gives you the opportunity to really build up your power base before unleashing your forces on the world.

Gigantic: 70 x 140
Not for the faint at heart, a gigantic map means it will take quite some time before you come across opposing civilization, and by the time you do, they may be considerably advanced and already toting around nukes. You should only pick a gigantic map if you are a seasoned veteran of the game.

Rules

Two special rules can play an important part in the game:

Bloodlust
By default, this option is toggled off. Toggling bloodlust on means you must conquer all your opponents to win the game. This voids out the other two ways to win: attaining the alien life project or gaining the highest score.

Pollution
Toggled on by default, pollution plays an important role in the later stages of the game. If you're a new player, you may want to consider toggling this off until you're prepared to deal with the problems that pollution can bring.
