Athens Through the Ages, part 3
Athens7,
Greece, 769BC ---
The rumours alluded
to in the report I filed 2 years back proved, alas, to be true.
The excessive pride of Sparta turned them against the benevolence
of Athens, and led them to oppose us in arms. However, their words
proved to be more vicious than their armies, since Sparta and Corinth
both fell to us within a year of hostilities having broken out.
This persuaded Eretria to remain under our tutelage, and not to
join the forces of Sparta and Corinth. A Council of the city's elders
also decided to take control of Olympia by force of arms as well,
in order to safeguard the city's supply of olive oil.
To
give thanks for these military triumphs, Mayor Rodentos decreed
the construction of Apollo's Sanctuary, saying that "it would
only be right to give thanks to the gods who have helped us in our
constant struggles.". After his Sanctuary was ready, Apollo
returned this faith by killing the dragon set upon the city by Ares,
in revenge for Sparta's defeat.
Athens8,
Greece, 762BC
--- All of the Hellenic world is now either under the protection
of, or allied to, glorious Athens! In the past 7 years, We have
conquered Elis, Taras, Themiscyra (in retaliation for a vicious
and unprovoked attack) and Mount Pelion. A rebellion at Olympia
was also crushed by force of our arms.
Hostile
gods have been troubling the city as well; thankfully, Apollo has
been able to kill all the monsters they sent to terrorise us. Only
Ares's Sparti caused any real damage, destroying the palace (the
Council had luckily snuck out of a back entrance) before they were
driven away by the gods.
To
complete the city's glory, Mayor Rodentos has had a sanctuary to
Athena constructed. It now towers over the city, emphasising our
impregnable and glorious position within the Greek world!
