Hercules Labors, part 2
Ephesus
as the second colony. You might arrive with a small treasury. This
is a rather small map, and again you can feed them urchins while
you mine copper and process the bronze. Get them some food and start
your copper mining early, you will want to meet any requests as
your allies won't be as nice to you if you are tardy. There is a
Quest to fulfill, and you have to call Hercules to the city. He
won't come until you win one of the Pan-Hellenic games, Cultural
Access is very important for your houses. Don't go broke importing
the wine and wood, you can try requesting them if your standing
is high enough in the Greek World. Gifts are always possible, too.
It might take some time to win the games, try to increase
your treasury so you will have some money to take home with you.
Never turn down a chance to make money. If you get any gifts or
tribute from other cities, you might want to sell them. The required
population of 1500 for calling Hercules is a good target. There
is only one industry in Ephesus, the foundries for processing bronze,
and you might have too many workers if you go much above that number.
Back in Tiryns for the 5th mission, you should
have some money from your colony experience and you will need it.
Everybody gets mad at you, no matter what you do. Mt. Malea doesn't
want to be your ally, Mt. Pelion has a change of heart and now Cyme
wants to get into the act. You do have the ability to build Elite
housing and can get yourself some Hoplites and fight them when they
come to visit, or pay the bribes. Up to you. Me, I am a coward and
I paid the bribes and got nice monuments for saving the city. Your
colonies will send tribute; I got marble and wood and just stored
it up, since I didn't have time to start the Zeus Sanctuary. You
can if you want, and have the labor for it. I made myself a nice
luxury block and gave them wine and armor, and left as soon as I
could.
Lerna
was my last colony to establish. This is a little map, and you only
need 1500 folks and to call Hercules to slay the Hydra and do a
Quest for some Golden Knicker. You can fish in the big pond, grow
grapes to make wine for Hercules' requirements, and sell your olive
oil. I just asked Tiryns for the fleece I needed, as I knew they
had plenty. You can sell the items you get for tribute and tax your
folks, so you should finish up with a tidy sum.
Tiryns for the 7th mission calls for 3000 population, Zeus
Sanctuary, and to rule Mt. Pelion. If you haven't conquered it before,
now is your chance. Best way is to make sure you have some luxury
houses to supply fighting men. Manors have wine and armor and hold
16 folks each and give you 4 hoplites per Manor. I had 12 Manors,
which gave me an army of 48 hoplites. Your colonies will pay tribute
in marble, wood and oil and you will get some gifts of armor and
bronze to make your statues. Zeus's Sanctuary is huge, and takes
a while to build. While I was waiting, Cyme launched an attack on
me! Well, I just sent my guys and an ally off to conquer them. After
that, I decided to take out Mt. Malea just in case they got any
similar ideas.
Hephaestus and Poseidon came back to visit, but weren't too bad.
If you don't have the goods you need to import by sea, then Poseidon
could be a problem. Use your fleece you can't sell to barter with.
And Lemnos will help out with food if you get hungry.
Zeus got done and wandered around the city looking important. I
had my 3000 population by then and set off to conquer Mt. Pelion.
They were already docile, so it might not have been too hard of
a fight. I really thought Zeus would go with me. Maybe he will go
with you.
