Racing Form, by Maggie

Adventure ID = 80
Date Submitted = 2001-08-06

Author's Description:

Narration files included; Poseidon required!

Racing Form Adventure Introduction: "After the rigors of discovering and establishing a foothold in the New World, you have decided that it's high time for folks to kick back and start enjoying themselves. Being a gambling man, you think you know just what the people want - plenty of racehorses and a place to race 'em. And you are determined to raise the finest horses ever ridden and build the largest racetrack in history."

Racing Form is designed for all levels of Zeus players -- as usual, those who desire a greater challenge should bump up the difficulty level if they wish. As its name implies, this adventure will eventually require a LARGE hippodrome... so leave room for it!

The narration files for the first two parent episodes, the colony episodes and the victory text are included in the main download, "RacingForm.zip," which also includes the .pak and .txt files. The narration for the last two parent episodes can be found in the Miscellaneous Downloads section, entitled "RacingFormNarration.zip."

Be sure to extract the RacingForm.zip and RacingFormNarration.zip files to a newly-created subdirectory entitled "Racing Form" (notice the space between the words), under your /Adventures directory. To eliminate the "open play" bug, also COPY the Racing Form.pak file to the /Adventures directory.

As always, your comments and suggestions are most welcome! This adventure was real a giggle to create... I had a little fun with New World names and personalities.

Enjoy!
Best, Maggie

Another fun and well narrated adventure Maggie. You have challenged me to build the biggest gambling facility of the new world. It was a fun adventure and glitch-free. The adventure was well thought out and allowed the player lots of interesting options and trade-offs to achieve success. Detroyt looked awful inviting early on. Olives were a bit precious until near the end.

Well, odds are that this is a winner. You can bet the house on it!

Maggie, your adventures are the best. I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to your next adventure.

I restarted this scenario, and have now completed the first episode. No lumber problems this time around. I really don't know what happened, but now everything seems to be working fine.

Just like BigKitty, I my lumber mills have stopped producing wood. Just after Cerberus was released and I started my temple to Athena. I have tried deleting all the mills, moving them, selling wood, not selling wood, etc...nothing works. Anyone figure this out yet? This looks to be a great adventure, but without wood, I'm not going to get very far. When I right click on a mill, it says that either the lumber jacks cannot get to the trees, or there aren't any trees. Obviously there are lots of trees, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Side note: Maggie, love the narration and love the play map. I was having so much fun when the lumber jacks quit, that if I could, I'd go cut down the trees myself.

Thanks for your kind comments, Logan! I use "CoolEdit 2000" by Syntrillium (www.syntrillium.com) which can be downloaded from their website. A full writeup on using CoolEdit to create the narration files can be found in the Map Editing forum if you're interested.

I absolutely love your adventures Maggie! This one is once again a true winner. Was it you that created an older one with a beautiful leaf in the map? Either way, all of yours so far have been very funny, and with your..em..ingenious take on ancient new england cities this one makes to be another funny winner. I see you even had Detroyt in there, though I have to wonder about your obviously biased opinion of Demoyne! (land of gold enchantment? hmm not quite what I was thinking)
Thank you for hours of play and can't wait for the next one!

No, this is absolutely not supposed to happen! I can't even begin to figure out why this occurred. Did all your timber mills get destroyed? Do have a storage yard that will accept wood? Are timber mills still available to be built? Did you try destroying your timber mill and hitting the "undo" button? (Sometimes walkers get stuck and you can unstick them by doing this.) Did your mill walkers get cut off from their source of wood?

Does anyone else have any bright ideas as to why this might have happened to BigKitty?

Okay! Whew! Thanks for the tip, BobT!

I have just (08/06/01; 5:15pm PDT) uploaded the "Racing Form.set" file in the Misc. Downloads section, but it may not show up on the downloads list until tomorrow.

For those of you who are having trouble getting Racing Form to play under Poseidon, you'll need to download the .set file, and add that to both the /Adventures and /Racing Form directories.

Sorry about the trouble, folks! I hope this little snafu doesn't discourage you from giving Racing Form a try! I promise to include the .set file in all future Poseidon adventures!

Best, Maggie

During the first episode, I tried to build a santuary to Athena but I can no longer produce wood. I stopped being able to after Cerberus attacked, yet even after he was killed, I still can't make wood. Is this supposed to happen?

Before I really start playing this, the game loaded and appears on the Zeus side, not Poseidon and there is no hippodrome tab to choose under administration in episode one. If that is your intention, will the tab appear later in the episode because building a hippodrome is a goal in episode one?

Quakeii:

This bug has me mystified. I removed all my own files from my "Racing Form" directory and replaced them with those I downloaded from here at Heaven Games. The adventure showed up under Poseidon and played fine. You must play this adventure under Poseidon because hippodromes are required in every parent episode and the hippodrome feature should be present at the very beginning.

Does anyone have any suggestions about this?

Thanks,
Maggie

I too have no answers. I downloaded the files again with the same results. The game Racing Form again appears in the Zeus section. I have downloaded several Poseidon fan created adventures including your own Love Hurts with no problem in the past. They play perfectly. WHY is this one appearing in the Zeus section with NO Poseidon buildings, including the hippodrome? Mystifying.

I'm having the same problem. I downloaded it and it shows up in the Zeus game not Poseidon. I would love to play this game.

Some help please,
Dawn

I am glad that someone else is having the same problem. Sometimes you feel like you are doing something wrong if you don't get any feedback. Let's hope someone can solve this soon!

I have the fix from Nixon at Impressions. Put a COPY of the Racing Form .pak file in the root directory of the Adventures folder. It works and now the game is recognized by Poseidon.

C:\Impressions Games\Zeus\Adventures (Racing Form .pak file)

Hi there

Havent played yet but will be shortly. I noticed the post suggesting to copy the .pak into the root adventures folder. I also noticed that you have stated that in your original post here Maggi :)

There is one further problem with some POS custom adventures. The need for the .set file also to be included in the custom folder. If you havent included the .set file, and if this is a POS adventure, you can end up with this problem.
