 | | More CBC Contests The good folks at CBC.net have got two more contests up and running, should you with to take your mind off some of the events of the past week with a little light gaming.
First off, there's an individual Zeus contest that goes by the name of Argeiphontes, which was designed by our own scenario supremo, Cherub bobT. Entries have to be in by October 14th, so there's plenty of time.
alternatively, if you fancy a little team action, then this page might be of interest to you. The time schedule on this one is a little tighter, with pre-contest maps having to be submitted by September 28th. More information on both of these contests can be found over at CBC. |
 | | Official Contest Want to win a nifty amaxon.com gift voucher or two? Then head over to the official site and participate in their latest contest. It's all about captions, so will suit those of you with a quick and agile mind (hang on, you've all got quick & agile minds ).
Be warned, though, you'll only be eligible to win if you live in one of the following areas:
U.S. and Canada (excluding Florida, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island and Quebec), Great Britain, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Austria, France, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxemburg, and Italy I hope the winner gets his prize quicker than me - I'm still waiting for my winnings from the first Core Rewards contest, held way back in the past...
Edit: The contest is now closed. As soon as winners are announced, we'll post news of it here (of course). |
 | | The user database merger is nigh Time for a bit of a technical talk.
A long time ago we started with two separate databases, one for the Citybuilders and one for Age of Kings (and all that followed after). Now we've passed the stage where this was needed and the Powers Above (i.e. Zen) will be merging the two databases. To make sure you'll still be with us after the merger he asks you to make certain that your email address (as written in your profile)is:- accurate
- an active account (i.e. we regularly get bounced emails from inactive hotmail users)
- not filtered (i.e. AOL members sometimes might have too high of a restriction on their mail and thus resulting in forum emails being bounced)
- not "overquota" (i.e. full mailbox)
... and most importantly, an account that you check regularly for mail.
We'll be send out more details about the forum user database merge later in the month. Not being able to read these emails and follow the instructions contained in them could possibly result in your account being renamed or purged during the merge. |
 | | Poseidon gets 9.3/10 The Poseidon bandwagon rolls ever on, with Deafgamers being the latest site to get swept away. Their review awards it a stunning 9.3/10, and calls it "A masterpiece".
Now, if that doesn't convince you to buy it, nothing will . |
 | | Next up: Fantasy? Speculation has been rife for quite a while now as to what Impressions are currently working on in the aftermath of the release of Poseidon. Well, over on the official forum, someone spotted that this month's US edition of PC Gamer mentioned that Imps was looking at doing something in a fantasy setting. Thanks to Angel Draco we can bring you this little scan of the relevant article, at the bottom of which it states that:
Impressions has just put the finishing touches on Zeus: Poseidon expansion pack, and is gearing up for a new fantasy-themed strategy game. Interesting stuff...remember that nothing's certain until it's officially announced, but this is something we can work on until then ;). |
 | | PC Arena Poseidon Review PC Arena has posted their review of Poseidon. They didn't seem to like it quite as much as some of the other reviews we've seen, but the Zeus x-pack still got a creditable 3.5/5. |
 | | CBC Winners Announced! CityBuildingContest.net has announced the winners of their latest pair of contests. ULTAC, the Caesar III contest, was won by Treborius (hard) and Pecunia Maxima (easy), and Merepatra (hard) and sicha (easy) took the honours in the Zeus contest, Minos of Crete.
Congratulations to the winners and all who participated - I gather that the current contest is a wee bit tricky, so go ahead and enter if you fancy a challenge. |
 | | Poseidon UK on Friday? It seems as if UK-based Zeus players won't have much longer to wait before they too will be able to get their hands on Poseidon. According to this page on Sierra's UK site, "Zeus Poseidon God Of Atlantis Expansion Pack" (as they call it, now there's a mouthful!) is due to ship this Friday (August 24th). On that same date, Sierra.de says that the Zeus x-pack will be avalable in Germany too. |
 | | SGO Poseidon Review Noticed on VE this morning that Strategy Gaming Online has taken a look at Poseidon. They seemed to like it too, giving it a very creditable 8.7/10. Since we haven't had a review snippet on here for a while, here's a little preview:
It seems as though the game developers at Impressions refuse to allow strategy gamers one productive weekend. Although, if you call building the city of Atlantis on your computer for hours on end productive, good for you-and please, seek help. I can, however, tell you that building the city of Atlantis is certainly fun-a characteristic that Impressions pumps into every one of their titles along with a healthy dose of charm. Poseidon, the new addon for Zeus: Master of Olympus, is imbued with charm from the moment you start it up. As a baritone voice shouts out, "Welcome to Poseidon", you can't help but feel a bit giddy at the prospect of once again constructing the perfect metropolis... Click here to read the whole review. |
 | | More from the Mouse Cherub mouse has finished her series of Poseidon walkthroughs, and they have been posted:
|
 | | 2 More Walkthroughs Cherub mouse has continued to plug away at Poseidon, and she has produced 2 more walkthroughs for your reading pleasure. Her version of "Life in the Mediterranean" can be found here, and her "Atlantis Reborn" hints are here. |
 | | Sierra Reorganisation Good news for all Citybuilding fans today, as I noticed on Evil Avatar that Sierra has finalised its reorganisation plans, which resulted in the closure of the development studio Dynamix (responsible for the Tribes series of games). Impressions is safe for the moment, though:
Cambridge, MA-based Impressions, will remain a key development studio, responsible for a number of pre-eminent titles including the Ancient City Building series and Lords of the Realm. Check out the full press release here at Stomped. |
 | | Article Bonanza We've got 3 new articles for you to read today. First off, there's the latest in Cherub bobT's series of articles dealing with the finer points of scenario design. This time, he turns his attention to goals, how they should be formulated, and how one should work towards them. Click here to read it.
Cherub mouse has also been hard at work, playing her way through Poseidon. She has written 2 walkthroughs for you, so if you're stuck on either Enlightenment in the West or Birth of Atlantis, then I'm sure you'll find them useful. |
 | | ECTS Awards: Voting Open Saw on VE that voting has opened for the ECTS Awards 2001. For those of you who haven't heard about ECTS, it's kinda like the European equivalent of E3, held here in London annually in September.
Anyway, amongst the categories where prizes will be awarded is 'Best PC Game of the Year' - Poseidon perhaps .
Click here to make your nominations. |
 | | Wargamer Poseidon Review Blue's carries word this morning that The Wargamer has posted their review of Poseidon, the Zeus x-pack. No score is given (not that I could see, at least), but it's a nice and positive review. Click here to read it.
Update: Gametropics has also posted a Poseidon review, giving it a score of 4.3 out of 5. |
 | | CBC Contest 7 The guys and girls over at CityBuildingContests.net have announced their latest contest (pair of contests, actually). If you're up for a bit of competitive Zeus playing them head over to this page and grab hold of 'Minos of Crete'. Alternatively, click here to have a go at their Caesar III contest map. |
 | | SirCam Warning In case you haven't heard or read about the latest virus doing the rounds on the Internet, then please take note of this article at ZDNet. SirCam is the latest worm buzzing around, and has infected several people here at HG. If you receive an email with the message "Hi, how are you?", or something to that effect, please don't open the attachment (that's the virus).
More information on SirCam can be found here. |
 | | The 4/5s continue Time for some more Poseidon-style chunky review goodness (can help weight loss only as part of a calorie-controlled lifestyle). VE had word that CGO has posted its own Poseidon review. The score? Another creditable 4/5. |
 | | Poseidon Review Redux During my daily trawl of the gaming news sites, I noticed on Blue's that there are a few more Poseidon reviews out there. So, if you're either still considering whether to pick it up, or are waiting for it to arrive on your shores, pin your ears back and listen up .
- GamesDomain gave it a creditable 4/5.
- GamePen also thought 4/5 was the right rating.
- Finally, GameSpy chose to do it the old-fashioned percentage way, and gave Poseidon 85%.
|
 | | Gameraiders love Poseidon! Another review courtesy of his Thunderyness this morning, and a pretty good one at that. Gameraiders.com took a lookat Poseidon and really took it to their hearts, giving it a hale and hearty 93%. Check out the full review here. |
