Skills Guide (cont.)

Staff

The staff is the default weapon for the sorcerer and also a handy weapon for the monk. The staff itself is a slow weapon that does a small amount of damage. However, with practiced use, it can stun opponents and lower your armor class. The sorcerer can become a master in this skill; it is his best weapon. The monk can become a grandmaster in this skill, and at grandmaster level in staff and unarmed fighting, the monk can combine the two attack modes for even more damage. By the end game, you'll want to make sure your monk is starting to master the staff.

Normal level: Skill added to attack bonus
Expert level: Skill added to armor class.
Master level: Chance to stun equal to skill
Grandmaster level: Staff usable with the unarmed skill
Where you learn it: Weapon shops
Where you upgrade to expert level: Withersmythe's Home, Harmondale; Hawthorne's Place, Mount Nighon
Where you upgrade to master level: Pederton Residence, Bracada
Where you upgrade to grandmaster level: Jillian's House, Avlee

Stealing

Stealing is a tough skill to use because there is always a certain amount of risk involved when stealing from shops and creatures. The only character that can really become talented at stealing is the thief. The ninja can become an expert in this skill, but only the thief can expect to steal and get away with it on a regular basis. To steal from a shop or creature, simply hold down Ctrl and click on the item in the shop or the creature. Your success depends on your stealing skill as well as your level of expertise (normal, expert, master, or grandmaster), the value and type of the item you want, and the strength of the target creature.

If you succeed in your steal attempt, there is a 40 percent chance that you get nothing. There is a 30 percent chance you get the item the creature would normally have if you killed the creature. And, there is a 30 percent chance that you get an amount of gold based on your expertise level and skill level. If you are caught stealing in a store, you cannot come back for 24 hours. If you are caught stealing from a creature, it will attack you or alert the guards. Either way, you must now pay a fine at the town hall for your actions. If you don't have enough money to pay your fine, you are thrown into jail (as happened to me when I entered Stone City and was jailed for a year). Needless to say, don't steal unless you are good enough to get away with it.

Normal level: Skill gives chance to steal
Expert level: Double effect
Master level: Triple effect
Grandmaster level: Quintuple effect
Where you learn it: Inns
Where you upgrade to expert level: Skinner's House, Harmondale; Erathian Sewers, Erathia; Elmo's House, Mount Nighon
Where you upgrade to master level: Shadowrunner's House, Deyja
Where you upgrade to grandmaster level: Everil's House, Tatalia

Next: Sword, unarmed, and water magic
