There's probably a nice Latin phrase that sums up the feeling you get when you make it to
the Iron Age, but I'll settle for a big YAHOO! The only new structures you can build in
this age are better walls, towers, and a Wonder.
The real crux of the matter at this point is in deciding what to research and build and
when to attack. As in the Bronze Age, there are too many upgrades to make, so you have to
pick and choose. Priests? War elephants? Centurions? All are equally wonderful, depending
on the supporting cast. Combined arms is very important at this stage, since you can be
hit by anything and everything. To kill priests you need chariot archers and chariots, or
at least fast cavalry. To kill siege weapons you need swift cavalry to run and die as they
hack at the ballistas. To combat the archers you need hoplites with the bronze and iron
shields researched. But these are all fun decisions.
One thing is certain: Keep your production lines going, especially for gold and stone
at this point. You might even want to send some weaker units, like axemen and bowmen, on
suicide missions to get under the 50-unit cap so that you can build better units. You can
also just select and delete them to kill them.
