Building a Roman City

Archaeologists digging in and around Rome's ancient housing sites noted that apartment-like dwellings, insulae, almost never had rooms they could identify as a galley or kitchen for cooking foods. Also, no rooms seem to feature any method of venting harmful gasses from fires that may have been set on the floor or in any other area of the rooms. However, local "kitchens" or food preparation shops have been uncovered mingled within insulae dominated residential areas suggesting that insulae-dwelling ancient Romans seldom cooked their own meals. Instead, they relied upon these local kitchens for hot meals and may have paid some approriate amount of dinarii or barter for the service. Markets were available for foods not requiring preparation such as fruit and were frequented by average citizens, but these markets appear to have sold cooked staples like meats to the kitchens, not directly to citizens. Lest we think we moderns invented "take home," let us acknowledge the ancient Romans who really may have been first with the idea.

Welcome to Caesar III Heaven, the premier C3 site on the Internet. Although the news on this page is no longer updated on a daily basis, there will still be very occasional newsflashes (scroll down the page), and all the resources collated here since October 1998 are here for you to peruse through. Here's a quick reminder of what we've got on offer:
  • Strategy Section - here you'll find any and all inside information about how best to play C3 - walkthroughs, housing blocks, you name it, we've got it!
  • Forums - Head over here to chat to other C3 players - share hints, tips, or just share a virtual cup of coffee in the Community forum.
  • Links - Other sites just like this (yes, there are some out there).
  • News Archives - see what's been going on in the past here at C3 Heaven.

There are plenty more sections - just follow 1 of the links on the left hand side of this page to see what we have on offer.

Enjoy!

July 30, 2002 — Transition Time

You will (or should) have seen yesterday's message about the Downloads Section being temporarily off line. I promised to tell you when it got better.

Well, the news is, it may get worse.

We are busy moving servers, and have run in some problems of varying severity. The Downloads Sections may be working intermittently. Uploading files is almost certain to fail, so it's best to wait with uploading until we get everything working perfectly once more.

Worse, even the sites themselves may be down intermittently. We are aware of this and doing out utmost to get everything working as soon and as smoothly as possible.

We apologize to everyone for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
