Character Creation (cont.)

Promotions
Initiate: The initiate is the second rank of the monk. The initiate gains one more hit point per level and also gains the ability to cast self magic. It is a very important promotion not only because it opens up spellcasting skills, but also because you can't advance to higher levels of expertise in many of your skills until you get promoted to this level. You get the promotion quest for this rank from Bartholomew Hume, who resides in the small settlement to the south of Castle Harmondale. He tells you to go and meditate in Zarkovv's Tomb in the Barrow Downs. You must enter the Barrows dungeons and navigate the catacombs system until you find it. It is the only barrows that is not numbered. Instead, it is represented by an ankh. When you arrive in the tomb, you'll be confronted by weak undead such as ghosts and shades. When you clear them out and come to the pool in the middle of this small tomb, Bartholomew will contact you and automatically promote any monks in your party.

Master: This is the third and final rank on the good side. The master gets two additional hit points, but gains no more spell points. However, this rank is vital because it lets you progress one more level in spell expertise and lets you achieve grandmaster level in your best skills. You get this promotion quest from Bartholomew again. He asks you to kill the high priest of the Temple of Baa. The temple is in Avlee, and it is a very tough dungeon to crack. Devils and clerics of the moon guard its innards. However, you don't need to clear out the temple to get promoted. You must just kill the high priest. Once you do that, return to Bartholomew, and you'll get promoted.

Ninja: The ninja has a very long and arduous promotion process. Stephan Sand in the Pit gives you this promotion quest. The ninja gets the same hit point and spell point progression as the master, but becomes a much better thief and can improve in disarm trap and stealing. However, the trade off for better disarm and stealing skills is no improvement in spellcasting power over the initiate level. Stephan tells you to decode an encrypted scroll and then follow the instructions therein. To decode the message, you must break into the School of Sorcery in Bracada and steal the Scroll of Waves. Once you do that, you'll find the pattern necessary to decode the encryption. After you do that, you must enter the Hidden Tomb in Erathia, whose location is revealed by cracking the code. Then you have to break in and steal the Shadow's Mask. When you return to Stephan Sand, he will promote you to ninja.

Next: Thief
