Character Creation (cont.)

Class-by-Class Overview
Now, we'll go over each individual class and take a closer look at its strengths and weaknesses. The three essential classes are knight, cleric, and sorcerer. A fourth class is the thief, but it is a highly specialized class. Every other class in the game is a combination of one or more classes. There are the dual-classed fighter sorcerers, like the ranger and archer, or the healer-fighters, like the monk and paladin. Then, there is the consummate spellcaster, the druid, which combines the cleric and sorcerer classes. Each class also has a repertoire of skills it can learn. These skills are vital to your success in the game, and some classes are simply better in some skills than others. You'll want to maximize your party's potential by choosing classes that can learn the most influential skills at the highest possible levels.

In each class entry, there is a general overview that discusses the class' strengths, requisite ability scores, and skills. Following that is a listing of the starting skills, starting choices when you create the character, the skills it cannot learn, and the skills in can learn in ascending order of mastery. We show the skills the class can learn to normal level, expert level, master level, and grandmaster level. In all cases, skills are presented in this order: weapons skills first, then armor skills, magic skills, and other skills.

All classes can be promoted to new levels that let them learn more skills and gain extra hit points or, in some cases, special abilities. In each entry, we'll also detail the promotions for each class and how to go about getting promoted.

TIP: When customizing your characters, don't add any points to luck. In fact, subtract points from all your characters' luck skill and add them to other scores. That's because you can always drink from a luck fountain in the Emerald Isle and bring your luck up to 15 for each character. Also, choose magic skills for your spell casters because they are so expensive to purchase in town.
