GameSpot: What are the little things that give you an edge on the battlefield?

DP: The single biggest battle advantage is to understand the game's timing and how to maximize your buildup. If you've played awhile and you're in a battle, you should be able to predict how long the battle will take and who will win. Armed with that knowledge, you know when you can toggle back to your base to rebuild units with the least impact on your battle. With a knowledge of the buildup, you know how long it takes to build a given unit or to research something. That's a big benefit because you can sequence your actions much more efficiently and always be prepared for battle by having groups of troops on hand.

TD:

  1. Planned attacks and planned strategy with other players
  2. Ability to control troops in combat efficiently
  3. Knowledge of unit weaknesses and abilities (for example, cavalry kills infantry but phalanx kills cavalry)
  4. A ruthless will to crush all opposition.

GameSpot: What's the best way to attack someone who is building or has built a Wonder?

DP: The absolute number one thing is to start attacking the Wonder as soon as you see the first message. Many, many people underestimate the time needed to kill a Wonder. Start attacking them early!

Next, do some scouting. Lots of times, players will have an undefended route to their Wonder or they may have built it within range of your units, etc. If they've built it in a smart spot, you'll have to have siege weapons. If they've built any kind of walls or towers, you'll probably need to knock those down to get a clear shot. If you have ten to 15 catapults and you have enough ground troops to defend them, it should be easy to take out the Wonder. If you're playing someone good, expect that you'll need to make four to five solid attempts (more than 20 guys each time) to kill off the Wonder (that number increases if you're playing with teammates).

TD: Catapults and/or trireme catapults protected by other troops.

GameSpot: What's the best tip you have to pass along?

DP: Hmm, a single tip.… I guess that would have to be to always build a lot of villagers. I never go to the Tool Age without at least ten villagers, but I prefer not to go until I have 20 or so.

TD: Never build a farm unless you have foraged/ hunted/fished all other food first.

GameSpot: Who's your favorite Ensemble person to whip in a game of AOE?

DP: That would probably be Tim Deen. He and I duke it out a lot and are both pretty good. It's fun to have a great battle with Tim and then yell and/or reminisce after the game is over.

TD: Dave Pottinger because he's very good and I have to earn a win with him.
