Beginners Guide

Welcome to my beginners guide, the section of the site where I give you tips and tatics to aid you in your game play. When reading these tips remember that they are based on my group setup and may or may not apply to your own selection.

A note on bugs:

You may or may not have heard that PoR is full of bugs, the worst one being the unistall problem. The uninstall bug was fixed with patch 1.1 and many others have been fixed since. My own personal experience has revealed only 5 bugs, although one of these is major.

  • Crash to desktop: Once in a while PoR can crash to the desktop, although not everyone seems to experience this. The only tip I have for this is to save often.
  • Lost Items: Some quests require you to give items to npcs/objects. Doing this while holding items, may result in some of the items being lost, meaning the quest cannot be completed. Again, I advice you to save before handing over the items. If the bug repeats, drop all quest itmes on the floor and one up, hand it over and repeat.
  • Relocking Doors: I have only encountered this bug once. After unlocking the door with a key and going elsewhere, that door can become relocked, leaving you stuck. This bug was reported to be fix in the 1.3 patch, but just in case, make regular saves with unique save names, so you do not lose much play time if forced to go back a save.
  • Graphics glitch: There is a graphics glitch in PoR that can cause FX from spells or feats such as sneaking to linger. This is a minor annoyance and can be fixed by saving and restarting the game.
  • Music: Another annoying glitch, this has only occured to me once. When entering combat the exploring music failed to turn off so I had two pieces of music playing at once. This ends when combat is ended.

    A Note on Character Generation

This information was procided by Jaxom. The pre-built characters have more points than the ones that you design yourself, for example I wanted to create a human cleric with the same stats as the pre-built one but with a different name only to find that I ended up about 5 points short.

    General Gameplay Tips

  • Examine everything: Examining the world around you as you progress could well save you time hunting for that elusive key or quest item.
  • Explore Everywhere: Try not to leave any 'black' areas on your map. These could easlit by hiding an important chest or secret room.
  • Mark your map: Every time you come across a locked door or set of stairs use the map markers (the flags) to note where and what you have found. It will come in handy when you need the stairs outside or the door for that key you just found.
  • Listen to your DM: Your DM will often inform you of important features in the area. Pay attention to him. If they don't make sense now, make a note on your map, as it may turn out to be important later.
  • Check what you're drinking: You can drink from barrels and fountains, but always right-click before doing so and read the object's name. You don't want to end up drinking poison!
  • Check your journal: Stuck on what to do next? Check your journal, it may hold an important clue or quest you had forgotten about.
  • Don't forget to rest: If your party is looking ragid or your sorcerer is low on spells, take a rest in a safe spot. You never know when you're going to stumble on that next, fatal enemy.
  • Save After Resting: Always save after you rest, this'll allow you to come back to your group with full health and full spells to cast, and can sometimes allow you to replay things you feel you could've done better on.
  • Party Order: If you want to change the order of your party, arrange them as you wish them by moving each character seperatly, then press the symbol with the coloured dots (bottom left) once to set the formation.
  • Know your party: There is nothing worse than entering your first real battle without knowing your party's abilites. Who is strong and who weak? Who is better in melee? Who's attacks are arranged? What skills does each member have?
  • Slow down: Struggling to adjust to the combat system? Slow the combat down in the options menu and give yourself time to get used to it. You can always speed it up once you're used to the way it works.
  • Right-click: Right-clicking anywhere where the walk icon appears brings up the current character's menu. Alternatively use the short-cut keys.
  • Protect the weak: Magic users can be vital in a battle, but they won't be much use if they get taken down early. Keep them away from melee combat if you can.
  • Don't get surrounded: Allowing your group to be surrounded can result in ruin, always try and keep an escape route open.
  • Use the terrain: Doorways can be an excellent advantage when facing an enemy that outnumbers you. If you force them to attack through a single doorway you can restrict your oponents to one or two at a time.
  • Ware the Magic User: Magic users can cause problems for your party, expecially early on. If you can bring a character into melee range of a caster they will be unlikely to attempt using magic - if they do there is a good chance your character will interrupt them. If you can't get within melee range try a daze type spell or one of continuous damage to reduce their effectiveness.
  • Try Again Later: Can't win a particular battle? Take your group elsewhere, gain more experience and return when you've leveled up. In a lot of cases this makes all the difference.
