The puzzles on Plateau Island are the last on your way to the end of the game: trapping Gehn, freeing Catherine, and saving Riven from his evil plans. The Map Table Puzzle is not the kind of puzzle that gives you access to another part of the island (like the Boiler Puzzle on Crater Island), but does reveal the information you'll need to solve the Marble Puzzle atop the Great Golden Dome.
The Marble Puzzle, by the way, turns on the Great Golden Dome to power up the Fire Marble Domes found on each island on Riven. Once the Fire Marble Domes have power, you can use the code found in Gehn's journal in his lab to get to the linking book that is contained within each. These linking books, regardless of which Fire Marble Dome they are in, will take you to Gehn's world, the first step in saving Catherine and stopping Gehn.
