Vampires appear when enough bodies have decomposed in your graveyard. While they can be a bit of trouble, especially in the vicinity of Warlocks, they're great fighters, especially in light of the fact that they become immortal when trained to level three (actually, they just teleport back to their lair to rest once their health is almost depleted).
Vampires make the best scavengers, and can increase the scavenger value of any monster in the room by one-half. In a pinch, Vampires can also be used for research, though you should only do this if all your Warlocks have deserted or died.
