I met myself, and then met myself again, and then we both got sucked up into a big hole in the sky. Weird.
If you're a little confused about what's going on, try this section several times.
Remember that this marshe has a lot to do with tyme.
The long and short of it: you've entered a temporal loop. First you meet your future self, then you come back as your future self.
If you do not reproduce your earlier actions and responses, you will cause a time paradox and be sent back to the beginning of the maze.
If you're still having problems, the next several clues will tell you exactly what you need to do.
As past Guybrush, you get to decide what questions you will ask. To make life easy, ask "What's this for?" Remember the response that future Guybrush gives. When you return as future Guybrush you'll have to give that response back again.
Also notice the order in which future Guybrush does things, as you'll need to reproduce that as well. He hands you a key; you ask a question, and he answers it. He then hands you two of the following three items: a rubber chicken, a rope, and a gun.
As past Guybrush, talk to future Guybrush. You'll ask him what number you're thinking of. Remember what number he says, as you'll have to repeat that number when you're the future Guybrush. (Confused yet?) Then open the gate with the skeleton key, let future Guybrush go on, and then leave yourself.
As future Guybrush, repeat the actions you saw yourself take: give Guybrush the key, answer his question correctly, give him two of the other three items (whichever ones he gave you the first time), answer his "What number am I thinking of?" question, and go on about your merry way. (You'll give past Guybrush the third item automatically.)
This is, by the way, my most favoritest puzzle in the game.
