5. The Siege of Rome
In 390 BC Rome suffered a disasterous check when a Gaullic
army laid siege to the city. After seven months, during which
only the Capitoline Hill remained in Roman hands, the Gauls
were bought off, but left the city in ruins. The Romans set
about reconstructing their city, surrounding it with a
continuous wall of huge tufa blocks. For eight centuries no
foriegn invader was to breach Rome's walls. The economic
dislocation caused by the Gaullic attack renewed the conflict
between the Patricians and the Plebians and, before the end
of the 4th century BC, the Plebians had won access to all
offices of the state and the Plebicites had been made legally
binding on all Romans.
Some Gaullic regiments are lagging behind the main army and
orders have not reached them to desist in attacking Rome.
Local brigands will use this as cover for looting what is
left of the Roman riches. The Capitoline temples to Jupiter,
Juno and Minerva must be preserved at all costs, for their
wrath is great.
