6.Water, Water Everywhere
The largely unplanned territorial expansion of Rome between
375 and 275 BC brought lasting economic gains, with control
of all of Italy, Rome established colonies on conquered
territories and assigned lands to individual Romans. By 250 BC
the cities population had reached 100,000. the booty from these
conquests helped defray the cost of public works as the
building of temples and roads and the improvement of the
city's water supply. By the 3rd century BC two aquaducts
carried fresh water to the city.
Immediately after the Tribunates were established, the Consul,
Spurius Cassius, dedicated the triumvirate of temples at the
base of the Aventine to Ceres, Liber and Libera. This was to
be appointed the sanctuary of the plebs, to some extent,
counter-balancing the Capitoline temples, the great protector
of the Roman state and its authorities, who were mainly
Patricians. Aediles were created to protect the temples,
guard the archives and keep order in the markets.
