9. Death of the Republic
During the civic strife that occupied most of the first half
of the 1st century BC, both population and problems multiplied
in Rome. The creation of private armies by the Roman nobility
offered employment to some of the lower classes, but
contributed to the political violence that spelled the end of
the republic. By the middle of the century 500,000 people were
receiving free grain, the upper classes were more interested
in luxurious living and their tastes were reflected in the
lavish building projects of Sulla and Pompey, public buildings
and theatres enhanced Romes beauty, but did not make it a more
livable city. In addition, heavy migration from the Hellenistic
east added to the burdens of an already overcrowded city.
