The Northern Canyons
Welcome, governor, to your new province.
Caesar has sent me to advise you on your assignment.
In recent years there have been complaints (many) from the governor of the lands to the east, Grumblius
Maximus. He is an old man, and a good friend of Caesar, who gave him a peaceful part of Britain in gratitude
for his past service.
Last year things got a little out of hand, and Caesar had to send a relief force to protect Grumblius. This
should certainly keep the Britons at bay for a while, but I wonder how long.
Grumblius described the land to the west as "picturesque woodlands, with pleasant hills". He said that he had
built a road, allowing patricians to stroll the woods, from which ample pastures could be seen alongside
streams of fresh water. He continued to describe the "beautiful canyons, further west".
Announcements have been made in Rome about this province, which should send settlers your way, but
between you and me, all is not as it seems.
For instance, the woods are just that, trees, trees and more trees, with not so much as a pool of water to
drink. The hills may be pleasant, but don't offer decent ores for iron mining. Even worse, the streams
bordering the woods are too narrow for navigation!
I took issue with Caesar sending you here, and persuaded him to be modest in his expectations, especially
concerning building a highly cultured and prosperous city. He reacted as if he already new the score, but still
demands respect from you. You should survey the province, traveling further west to the "beautiful canyons"
(more like wolf infested hills). Maybe you can combine the tasks of creating a thriving city with making the
required buffer zone for Grumblius.
