Desc: My design uses mostly enclosed walkway blocks and stays
close to the shore line and food. This is my first widespread use of
enclosed walkways and so they might not be optimum. I discovered that the
bath house girls cut corners and had to replace some houses with statutes.
The problem was that if a 2x2 did not form in the corner, then the furthest
single house would not get bath house coverage.
I did not import food and had only the goal of Large Insulae. The two houses
on the island were intended to be Large Casa, but the Gladiators kept
thinking that they had a path across to an Amphitheater on the west mainland
and so the houses were often at Medium Insulae. There were a few Medium
Insulae because of space limitations, but I chose not to fix them since my
prosperity had settled in at 64 several years ahead of time.
The city is running fine, but has a few things that are less than best. I
overbuilt industry, because I had remembered the wrong number for workshop
production. I have already deleted some and would delete more if running this
city for more years. Since I needed less furniture and oil workshops than I
had originally planned, a good modification would be to move the oil
production just west of the furniture production. This would make it quicker
for the caravans to deliver olives. Another problem is that I should have
led the road from the wharfs back to the housing in a few more locations,
rather than giving them the option to continue along the coast. This
periodicaly resulted in some loss of labor to wharfs and pottery workshops.
I put quarries, mines, and weapon workshops on the island and pottery
workshops on the mainland. The quarries and workshops mostly delivered to
the warehouses on the mainland. This way I was able to use only the one dock
on the mainland and have almost all sea trading done by June. Adjacent
warehouses and one dock works on yet another city. I just don't understand
why people keep recommending building more than one dock for only two sea
trading cities.
