WML, or the Wireless Markup Language, is to the mobile phone what HTML is to the web browser. Based on XML and designed specially to take into account factors such as a small screen, low resolution, and low bandwidth, WML will allow mobile phone and pager users "multimedia capabilities" - the ability to access e-mail, information, and services from the Internet via their wireless device. Research shows that growing support for WAP (the Wireless Application Protocol), from almost every major communications company (Nokia, Ericsson, Microsoft, IBM, Cellnet, Siemens, etc), is such that there will be an estimated 10s of millions of WAP browser-enabled products being used by consumers by the end of 2000.

Companies who use the Internet or other forms of multimedia at the moment will find that they need to make their services available via WML and WMLScript in order to tap the ever-growing market of mobile phone users.

Book Overview

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) provides a universal open standard for bringing Internet content and advanced services to mobile phones and other wireless devices. It is the platform for the new generation of "media phones".

WML and WMLScript are part of the latest WAP 1.1 standard. WML is based on XML and is an accessible easy-to-learn markup language, not dissimilar to HTML. WMLScript, based on ECMAScript (the standardized version of JavaScript) allows the developer to give scripting functionality to WML cards and decks (analogous to HTML pages).

This book will teach both the markup and the scripting language that will allow you to develop content for display in mobile devices. It will teach you from the ground up, so whether you're a web developer already or you are totally new to this area, the step-by-step approach provided in this book will allow you to become a WML and WMLScript expert.
