Welcome Speech of the Mayor of the State Capital Saarbrücken

Major Hajo HoffmannWelcome to the State Capital Saarbrücken!

I am very pleased that you are interested in our city.

Saarbrücken is a modern, dynamic and future-oriented city located at the border to France and at the heart of the cross-border region Saarland-Lorraine-Luxembourg (Saar-Lor-Lux). Counting 200,000 inhabitants, Saarbrücken is one of the smaller cities in Germany, which is an asset, however, as it makes a lot of things much easier here than they are in other places. Charmingly, Saarbrücken is a city of short distances which can be easily discovered. It is a university town that offers fair grounds and convention centres and is a cultural and industrial hub of supraregional importance.

Summer 2001 in our city will be marked by a large range of small and large events. Especially youngsters will have a variety of programmes to choose from during their summer holidays, for example the children's holiday programme of the Office for Education and that of the zoo. Apart from the numerous street fairs in the different parts of the city, the grown-ups will have the opportunity to indulge in the traditional Saarbrücker Altstadtfest, a street party in the old part of Saarbrücken, the International Theatre Street Days, the Nauwieser Street Festival and the currently largest summer event in town, the Saar Spektakel, a festival on and along the Saar River with water sports competitions and more, just to name a few. In August, the Vélo SaarMoselle will be launched, offering different events for cyclists along the cycle lanes near the Franco-German border.

You will find more information on Saarbrücken in the index under "Our City", "Chronicle", "Event Calendar" as well as "Press Releases".

If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail.

I would be very pleased if you spared some time to visit Saarbrücken in order to get to know our wonderful city not only virtually but on the spot. We are looking forward to your visit.

Yours

Hajo Hoffmann
Mayor of the State Capital Saarbrücken
President of the Association of German Municipal Corporations
