Guard posts are an efficient means of protecting your weak areas. Place them in distant areas where your Imps are mining gold, then place one of your minions (preferably a high-level creature with a ranged attack) on duty. This will protect your Imps and keep enemy Imps mining the area. Make sure you occasionally give the guard a couple of chickens. This will keep him happy and prevent him from leaving his post and walking a great distance every time he gets hungry.
