The Growing Seasons , by SValkyrie74

Author's Description:

I, Pharaoh, order you to the mouth of the river of life. I am initiating a plan that shall immortalize me along with the stone tomb in which I shall be buried. It is my wish for you to harvest reeds, make papyrus and cultivate crops for a garden library in my capital city, for which the gods shall surely look upon with envy. The mouth of the river is rich in raw materials and fertile plains, but the bounties present challenges of their own. The floods stay high longer at the mouth, so the flooding period is a month longer and the growing season a month shorter than in other areas of the Nile. Copper mining is available, but it and any settlements nearby shall be inaccessible during the annual floods. Reed marshes are also traversable only through the floodplains. Only a few areas along the river are suitable for docks and ferries, safe from the annual flooding, which are distant from where your more lucrative resources are located. Export goods may be hindered by the m!
any weeks your workers will have to spend on the roads. How you solve these difficulties is not my concern - that's why I'm sending YOU. You shall find a way to make your city the trading hub of Northern Egypt, and send me the supplies I shall request for my grand library. I shall require large amounts of papyrus and copper, so be ready with ample supplies. I shall request other items from time to time also. Do not disappoint me. Go, now, and harvest the bounties of Osiris.

Map notes: Currently, I only have the map drawn, but I will have a full scenario as described as soon as I get the blasted events to work the way I want. My goals for the map were as follows: 1) I wanted a fairly detailed map with resources presented in interesting ways. 2) I wanted a somewhat reasonable geologic map with mountain ranges and other features that look believable, not mere rectangular blocks. 3) I wanted to somehow make the annual flooding of the Nile important in other ways, not just for agriculture. Reeds and copper mines accessible to the kingdom only during the growing season is what I came up with. 4) I think it looks kind of neat to watch the river expand to an aluvial fan during the floods. 5) If I wanted to limit access to something, I tried to do it in a way that looks natural. For instance, to limit the amount of mineable area on the mountains, I made streams and lakes to block them. 6) I originally made this map on a smaller scale, and althou!
gh I think the smaller one looks better aesthetically, this larger map has resources more remote like I originally wanted, and there's a little bit more room to cultivate thriving settlements, but not gigantic. However, I'll have to spend more time to work out the mechanics in the scenario with the newer map size. 7) There are meadows on the map, but no irrigation. I only really put them down because in some places along the banks of the Nile are rich green plants in stark contrast to the arid deserts directly next to them. While you can put meadow farms on them, I wouldn't expect fertility much higher than 25%. Your best bet for farming is on the floodplain. Nothing stopping you from building meadow farms to suppliment your harvests and pharaoh's requests (when I get the full scenario running), if you want.

So, I present the clean "Just City Building, Pure and Simple" map for comments and enjoyment until I get the event sequences adequately running. Send email to SValkyrie74@yahoo.com
