Author's Description:

Island Village

Pharaoh Djoser calls you to an audience.

You recently survived a battle in middle Egypt, keeping the kingdom intact, but by such a small margin that he is worried about your military prowess. You explain that war is not really your way of life. You have a wish for peace.

The Pharaoh is puzzled. How can he reward you for saving a city, by giving you an apparently peaceful area to manage? Surely you would look weak? Fortunately you have a suggestion. "Is it possible that I could work to expand Egypt, but in a subtle way, not inspiring fear in the locals?"

Pharaoh consults his advisors. The island of Crete is already inhabited, though there is a rocky area, away from the coast, which could be expanded without drawing too much attention. Perhaps you could show the value of Egyptian civilization, but work “undercover”.

You should not seek to trade with the heart of Egypt, so as to appear a local man. You should not raise suspicion by displaying any of the trappings of war. No weapons must be in view, other than those strictly needed to guard you treasury.

Your citizens should be shown the gods of Egypt, and given the benefit of education. The splendor of spacious manors should adorn your city, though it is not necessary to draw too much attention. Some abroad have spread rumors that Egyptians are enslaved in work camps to erect huge monuments. You must dispel that rumor, by using only skilled craftsmen.

“Should I build an obelisk”? You enquire “Built of sturdy granite”.
“Great idea” replied the Pharaoh. “In fact, build 2”.
You boast “And the first will be complete well within a decade”!
“I bet I can attract 2,500 people to this town”!

Pharaoh did not expect too much of you, just “half the best city in Egypt” he laughs.
(so that’s 50% of culture and prosperity to be reached). “I hope to be more than just pleased with your results” (expecting that you achieve a rating of 60% in the kingdom).

You set off to your island, with an 8,000Db cash grant.
On arrival, you find a spot with lush farmland, and ample fishing (though the valuable forest may need to be cut down to reach the waterfront).

It’s then that you realize your first mistake:

There is no granite on the island, and no locals wishing to trade this with you either!
Perhaps you will find a way to use the plentiful food as a bargaining tool.

Nice mission. As with all small maps, usage of space plays
main role. Required ratings are reasonable, as well as population;
not hard to achieve, but if you try to build "just so",
without any planning, you will probably have problems.
Money is plentiful, thanks to pottery and wood export.
Later - if you comply to the requests - a new trade route
will become available; it will allow imports of granite and
export of jewelry. (Number of attempts is limited, and if
you ignore these requests completely, you lose, as there is
no other way to obtain granite for the obelisks! This is
hard, but fair, as the introduction speaks about problematic
imports of granite.)
I finished in 174 months, Culture 60, Prosperity 100,
Kingdom 97, population 3200, funds around 95000 Db,
2 Spacious Manors.
I was playing it for fun, not for speed records - it can
be done a lot quicker. Could have KR 100, too - but somehow
I forgot to build a mansion, and that cost me 1 point of
increase per year.
Thanks, Trevor, good job!

When I first started this scenario one question popped into mind; How on earth can I fit two Spacious Manors here?!
This map is by all means extremely small, and the fact that there is a chain of rocks in the middle doesn’t make it bigger. Not at all!

The idea for this scenario is really good. I am to build 2 small obelisks, get 50 on all ratings and get 2500 people into the city, and I need a Spacious Manor. The real challenge is actually, to fit two spacious manors in that small area, and I sure had to do some serious thinking to get there.

The granite issue (the lack of) is really good, since you can't get it in any other way than fulfilling requests. This makes the requests much more important

If you check the Desc. in the download section you’ll se the story-line in this scenario, but perhaps it should be included in the .zip file. The story, by the way fits the scenario pretty really well

Now, something that is strictly cosmetic, and therefor shouldn't be put to much importance on... All of the Egyptian cities are on this map, not a single one has been removed, and all of them are set as non-Egyptian cities with no settings at all, meaning that they all appear as small huts (or something like that), on the map. Perhaps these should have been removed, at least some of them

I finished with 65 in Culture, 78 in Prosperity, about3500 people, 100 in kingdom rating.
This took 124 months to do for me.

Did you know that you have the most-downloaded scenario? Over 2000!

Player Comment by friend of the Pharao:

Nice scenario, makes you work for the victory. I started out by placing the sites of the future manors, then I started to develop all the various industries. Saving enough of each product to satisfy the demands. A little bit of everything is thrown in here. I ended up with just enough trees to keep it going and I sure needed every single piece of land.
