Description:
Bubastis was my first attempt on a difficulty level of “Very Hard” and I feel I did pretty well.
Bubastis ended up with:
Culture: 90
Prosperity: 100
Kingdom Rating: 100
Funds: 46,064
Population: 5617
Completed in 261 months on “Very Hard”.
Some comments on Bubastis:
Started on the Southern Shore. Main industry was pottery, linen and wood. Food source was grain, game meat, and fish.
Had little pockets of non-connected communities for wood, entertainment, and granite.
Hardest part of the game was controlling the Hippos so the reed gatherers could gather their reeds. This was done through the use Towers and gardens that lead a path into parts of the marsh that did not have Hippos. (Note: these gateways have to be changed as the reed gatherers go further into the marsh)
Built 9 palatial estates, but in this scenario you really only need 1 (note: 1 palatial estate counts as 4).
Built 4 types of housing blocks (palatial estate, fancy residence, common residence, and spacious homestead). Built different housing blocks to control amount of beer, linen, and papyrus used.
Could have done a better job with the monuments. If I were to do it again I would have more carpenters available.
Playing on “Very Hard” the following was observed:
Hippos are meaner and extremely aggressive. Did not even attempt to export papyrus because of the unpredictable reed gathering.
Need to really keep aware of population, as Pharaoh will stop migration if no jobs are unavailable.
Need to constantly keep a positive income every year as your Culture rating will drop drastically every year you are in the red.
As papyrus was extremely hard to produce I ended up with several isolated (nonconnected) library complexes. This approach will save you from having to use up papyrus but will still give you the full culture rating.
Also "Very Hard" suits those who are slow players and who pay a lot of attention to the details, as you will often find yourself constantly checking the overseers.
Hope this helps,
Vriesea
