Even though this is called the "gauntlet", you do not have to build a series of forts along the Nile to succeed. I Built a fortress and then added city protection along the vunerable West around the gold mines.
Provide Seth his due (continually) and he will reward you greatly!!
It doesn't hurt to start importing sandstone early for the monument, but don't do it at the expense of your defenses.
Don't forget the Navy.
